Weeks 4 & 5 & 6 - JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes NYC Chapter

A quick note before we jump into our activities this week.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the terrible tragedies at the Boston Marathon. Personally, I went college in Boston and am so saddened by these events. As athletes, I know many of us hold endurance sports of all kinds in a special place in our hearts and I am so grateful for the wonderful impact the Ride to Cure has had on my life. I take comfort in knowing that I can join with all of you on the road at this time.

The next few weeks there are quite a few things going on both on and off the bike with JDRF!  Saturday's ride was excellent -- with hundreds of other NYC riders heading up River Road to enjoy a brisk Spring morning.  We will be back there in May as a group for additional mileage.

We will be trying something new for weekday rides this year--one evening/two rides.  Chris will be in Prospect Park and I will be in Central Park.  However, in Central Park I will be on foot -- running.  So if you'd like to ride with the group -- bring your bike.  If you want to run (cross-training!) wear your sneakers.

Week # 1 - Prospect Park Kickoff Ride Sat 3/23

Welcome to ride week #1!  It's time to break out the bikes, wipe off
the cobwebs and have some fun.

Our first kickoff ride will be held on Saturday March 23 in Prospect
Park, Brooklyn.  We will meet INSIDE the park entrance @ 10AM; We will
be entering the park at 15th Street and Prospect Park West for +/-5
loops (12-16-20 miles).  Please note that the ride will depart at
10am; all last minute preparations, pre-ride discussions, etc. will
occur in the 5-10 minutes leading up to our departure time.

Please note we have moved the start time one hour forward -- to get
slightly warmer weather.  The Central Park kickoff will remain as-is
until we get closer and see how the weather develops.

Please RSVP on the Google Group for this ride:

Questions on what to wear?  Email me, Jen and Chris or post it on the
Google Group/Facebook, etc. and get many voices.  As obvious as it may
sound, helmets are mandatory on all JDRF rides. I recommend long
pants, a long sleeved jersey/jacket, a base layer and something to
cover your ears and full-fingered gloves. Its always easier to take
something off than freeze. Also, dont forget to bring a water bottle
and stay hydrated.  What can we help you with?

See you on the road!

The Start of 2013

Hi Crankees! Welcome new and returning riders to the 2013 JDRF New York Ride to Cure Diabetes team.

The year is just getting started and as head coach this year I am honored to be riding with all of you and helping you achieve your goals on the bike.  Jen Davino, Chris Castaldi (fellow NYC Ride to Cure coaches) and I are busy mapping out our ride season so stay tuned for more information and a training schedule before the end of February. We will begin our official training season in mid-March with our annual kickoff ride. We look forward to bringing back some favorite rides in the New York area including Bedford, Long Island, Bear Mountain, 9W and weeknight park rides. Social events and recruiting opportunities are also in the works throughout the year.

We already have 32 riders signed up for our 2013 season and there is still snow on the ground! This is great!  We hope to keep the recruiting momentum going and get more riders to join our great group of Crankees riders and support JDRF, a cause I know we all are passionate about. While the Nashville ride is now sold out -- JDRF is creating a wait list if you have friends of family interested in riding there.  Remember, there are 5 other GREAT rides that still have slots available for registration.

I am very excited for our upcoming season and look forward to riding with all of you. See everyone on the road soon.
